The nursing home run by the Congregation of Franciscan Hospital Sisters in Lopera, serving 25 elderly residents and employing 15 workers, will cease operations due to economic non-viability, causing concern in the town.

The Congregation of Franciscan Hospital Sisters has announced the imminent closure of its nursing home in Lopera, a facility operational since the 1950s. The decision, attributed to alleged economic non-viability and a significant structural deficit, directly impacts the 25 residents, mostly elderly individuals, and the 15 staff members.
The building, a 20th-century mansion donated by the Valenzuela Rodríguez family to the congregation and later adapted for care services, is central to the dispute. The nuns have informed the Lopera City Council of their intention to relinquish management, proposing to hand over the property on the condition that the council takes over and maintains its charitable and social purpose.

"We don't see any willingness from the City Council to provide a solution to this issue; they are just stalling."

Martín Valenzuela · Spokesperson for the Lopera for the Residence platform
Martín Valenzuela, a descendant of the donating family and spokesperson for the community platform Lopera for the Residence, has voiced the frustration of families and workers regarding the perceived lack of municipal action. The group, representing those affected, urges the local government to find urgent solutions to ensure the continuity of the service, the only one of its kind in the municipality.
In response, the Lopera City Council, led by socialist mayor Carmen Torres, has established the Monitoring and Defense of Residential Care Committee. This forum aims to analyze the situation and identify pathways to secure the service's stability, acknowledging the matter's "special social relevance" for the well-being of the elderly users.
The council has extended invitations to the Regional Government of Andalusia (Junta de Andalucía) and the Provincial Council (Diputación Provincial), as well as the Ombudsman (Defensor del Pueblo), to mediate in the conflict. The platform, meanwhile, calls for a municipal plenary session to agree on taking over the center's management and criticizes the municipality for keeping its day center closed, forcing seniors to travel to the neighboring town of Porcuna.
