The intense heatwave affecting almost the entire Iberian Peninsula brought extreme temperatures last Monday. According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), 101 weather stations, representing 12.2 percent of its 828-station network, recorded values equal to or exceeding 40 degrees.
The highest readings were concentrated in Andalusia. Andújar surpassed the 45-degree mark, while Bailén reached 44.2 degrees and Montoro hit 43.5 degrees. Extreme heat was also felt in the northeastern peninsula, with temperatures above 42 degrees in areas like Lleida and the Ebro valley.
Nights offered little respite. During the early hours of Tuesday, approximately thirty stations did not record minimum temperatures below 25 degrees. Exceptionally, for the third consecutive day, nighttime temperatures in coastal areas of Almería did not drop below 30 degrees, an unprecedented phenomenon for June in the peninsula until 2026.
Among the most notable minimum temperatures were 31.5 degrees recorded in Cabo de Gata (Almería), 28.7 degrees in Cazorla, 28.5 degrees in Jaén, and 28.2 degrees in Carboneras (Almería).
