The Palacio de Villapanés in Jerez de la Frontera has been hosting the third edition of the Maravíllame International Short Film Showcase, organized by the University of Cádiz, since April 14. This event has established itself as a key platform for audiovisual creation within the university sphere, concluding on April 16.
The opening ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including Rafael Caballero, the showcase's patron and a renowned producer, Francisco Zurita, Culture Delegate of the Jerez City Council, and Manuel Ceballos, Director of the Secretariat for University Extension and Social Projection. Also present were José Antonio López, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication, Carlos Antón from EGEDA, and Enrique A. Martínez from UNIA, among other industry representatives.
This edition has shown significant growth, receiving 384 short films from universities worldwide. Of these, 41 have been selected for the semifinals, from which the winners of five awards will emerge in categories such as fiction, documentary, international production (linked to the SEA-EU alliance), Spanish university audiovisual work, and advertising spot.
The showcase emphasizes its international scope with the participation of European and Ibero-American institutions, alongside a strong Spanish presence, reflecting both growing interest and improved quality of submitted works. The organizers highlight that Maravíllame serves as a strategic tool to connect university education with the audiovisual industry, fostering collaboration and offering professional development opportunities.
The role of the patron, Rafael Caballero Barrios, a film producer and location specialist with experience in productions like Netflix's The Crown series, the film Nowhere, and HBO's García, strengthens the link between academia and the industry. The showcase also helps position Jerez as a reference point for university audiovisual creation, aligning with institutional commitment to culture and promoting young talent as a driver of development.
The program includes official screenings and an extensive block of training and professional activities, such as masterclasses, round tables, pitching sessions, and networking events, designed to promote knowledge exchange and synergy creation. A new feature this year is a mobile application to consult the full program and enhance the audience experience.
The inaugural day began with a masterclass on audiovisual production in film and fiction series, given by Rafael Caballero Barrios, followed by a round table titled “New Voices in University Short Film.” The first short film screenings, the core of the event, have already commenced, serving as a meeting point for emerging talent.
The III Maravíllame International Short Film Showcase, organized by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication, aims to foster interaction among students, emerging filmmakers, and industry professionals. It benefits from the strategic collaboration of the Vice-Rectorate for Culture and Sustainability of the University of Cádiz, the Andalusian Audiovisual Council, the Jerez City Council, EGEDA, the Osborne Foundation, the Chair of Wine, Society and Sustainability, the University Institute for Sustainable Development, and the international SEA-EU alliance, solidifying its role as a platform for international university talent exchange.
