The decision by María Jesús Montero to name Fernando López Gil as the number one candidate on the PSOE list for Cádiz has caused a political "earthquake" within the party. This choice contradicts the proposal from the Provincial Executive Committee, which had designated Juan Cornejo to lead the candidacy.
The change became public after Montero hinted at "some kind of adjustment" to the list. The original proposal from the provincial executive placed Juan Cornejo, the provincial organization secretary, as number one, followed by Rocío Arrabal and Fernando López Gil in third place, respecting gender alternation.
“"I'm sorry but you have been a very bad general secretary and candidate. Thank you for your resignation!"
The imposition of López Gil, a figure critical of the current provincial general secretary, Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix, has been interpreted as a defeat for the latter. Cornejo, for his part, has announced his resignation from the list after not being the top candidate, voting against the modification, considering it disloyal to the decisions of local assemblies and the provincial executive.
Fernando López Gil has an extensive political career, having served as delegate of the Junta in Cádiz and right-hand man to Patricia Cavada in the San Fernando City Council. Currently, he is responsible for Montero's campaign strategy, suggesting a strengthening of their relationship. His appointment is also explained by his reluctance to occupy the third position, given the possibility of being left out of the Parliament according to some polls.
The final decision was made by the Director Committee, a body composed of general secretaries from provincial groupings across Andalusia, meaning representatives from provinces like Jaén, Almería, or Huelva influenced the choice of the number one for Cádiz. This situation highlights the deep internal division within the PSOE of Cádiz, which has suffered four consecutive defeats against the Partido Popular in recent electoral cycles.
