Following the fifth consecutive electoral defeat for the PSOE in the province of Cádiz, the party is analyzing the situation ahead of future municipal and general elections. Provincial General Secretary Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix has called for deep self-criticism to regain the party's relevance in forming governments.
In this context, Ruiz Boix referred to Irene García, the previous general secretary of the Cádiz socialists, who did not secure a seat in the Andalusian Parliament after being fourth on the list for Cádiz. The provincial secretary expressed the party's intention to involve her in future responsibilities, including upcoming electoral events.
However, García has explicitly ruled out the possibility of running in the municipal elections for Sanlúcar, a city where she previously served as mayor. This decision could be interpreted as support for internal criticism of the current leadership of PSOE of Cádiz, led by Ruiz Boix since 2021.
The former second vice-president of the Andalusian Parliament has stated her preference for grassroots politics. Her potential inclusion in the lists for next year's general elections, where figures like Fernando Grande-Marlaska, Mamen Sánchez, and Ruiz Boix himself won seats in 2023, also seems uncertain.
The internal climate within the Cádiz PSOE is described as turbulent, with differing viewpoints and a lack of solid unity, as evidenced in the compilation of the provincial list for the recent Andalusian elections. Managing electoral defeats and the existence of factions, such as the so-called 'irenismo', present a complex scenario for the party.
