The Cadiz-born architect Francisco Reina Fernández-Trujillo, co-author of the Roman Theater of Cadiz expansion project, shared details at the College of Architects of Cadiz on how this intervention will connect the enclave with the city and its neighborhood.

The expansion works of the Roman Theater of Cadiz, a long-awaited project, are about to begin. Architect Francisco Reina Fernández-Trujillo, in collaboration with Tomás Carranza, has designed an intervention that seeks to revitalize the perception of the building and improve its accessibility.
According to Reina, the key lies in the transformation of the Posada del Mesón, a 17th-century building, which will serve as a link between the theater and the contemporary city. This new entrance, through the northern aditus, will recover the sense of the ambulacrum and the complete arch, offering a more natural experience and a better understanding of the architectural complex.

"It is a project with a long history. I joined in 2017-18 to be part of a planning program that has been prolonged over time. It is a very important and essential action that will completely change the perception of the building."

The architect also reflected on the slow pace of heritage projects in Cadiz, mentioning the decade-long wait for the Roman Theater and the situation of other buildings such as the Casa Pinillos or the Museum of Cadiz. He highlighted the importance of a management plan to accompany rehabilitation works to ensure the continuity and use of the spaces.
In his conference at the College of Architects of Cadiz, Reina discussed the restoration of the Artillery Factory of Seville, an example of how to integrate the historical stratification of a building with new contemporary layers. This approach, which seeks a respectful dialogue between past and present, is the same one he applies to the Roman Theater so that it fully integrates into the current life of the city.
