The Andalusia, Ceuta, and Melilla Delegation of the College of Civil Engineers, Canals, and Ports has presented a detailed report identifying 13 public works in critical condition. This document, included in the II National Catalog of Public Works Heritage Interventions, emphasizes the urgency of conservation, rehabilitation, and public awareness efforts for these structures, many of which hold significant tourism potential.
In the province of Cádiz, attention is focused on the Río Arillo Tidal Mill, located between Cádiz and San Fernando, and the Zuazo Bridge, connecting San Fernando with Puerto Real. The mill, managed by the Ministry for Ecological Transition, is in a state of ruin, with its rehabilitation stalled due to a lack of consensus among public administrations. This mill is recognized as one of the most important of its kind in the Atlantic west.
Meanwhile, the Zuazo Bridge, under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Public Works, has been awaiting comprehensive rehabilitation since 2008. Although its current structural condition is acceptable, it is crucial to revive this project to highlight the value of one of the province's most significant historical civil engineering works. It is proposed to update the intervention plan and fund it through the 2% cultural program, with the Junta de Andalucía responsible for its rehabilitation after declaring it a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC).
The report also highlights other at-risk infrastructures in Andalusia, Ceuta, and Melilla, such as the Bayarque Hydroelectric Power Plant and the Sierra Alhamilla Railway in Almería, the Iron Bridge over the Pedroches Stream in Córdoba, the Hacho Bridge in Granada, the Tharsis Pier in Huelva, the Casas Nuevas Mills and Hydroelectric Power Plant and the Walls of Santa Catalina Hill in Jaén, and the Montejaque Dam in Málaga. In Ceuta, the Sarchal Fort is mentioned, and in Melilla, the Mineral Loading Dock and the San Carlos Fort, all requiring urgent conservation and enhancement efforts.
