The Provincial Delegation of Culture of the Regional Government has announced the launch of a project to refurbish this historic complex. Following a major restoration in the 1990s, the monument has seen a significant decline in maintenance, particularly in the cleaning of its walls and the upper access, which has never been opened to the public.
Initial work has focused on removing rodent nests found in the rear courtyard, which faces dwellings in the Pópulo neighborhood. Administrative bureaucracy has delayed a project that, in principle, should not be complex, focusing on cleaning the staircase, the upper patio, and the small moat separating the wall from San Juan de Dios street, often used as an urban dumping ground.
Beyond these cleaning tasks, which are expected to be ongoing, the Regional Government has had a comprehensive intervention pending since 2024. At that time, an investment of 148,400 euros was announced for restoration work on various sections of the wall and the medieval courtyard. Although in April 2025 it was indicated that the necessity report was available, the work has not yet materialized.
It is expected that, after the cleaning, the complete restoration of this historic site will proceed, restoring its splendor and allowing for public enjoyment.
