For the first time, five high schools from the province of Cadiz are joining the international initiative STEM Racing supported by Formula 1®. This educational program challenges students to design, build, and compete with a scale prototype of a Formula 1 car, powered by compressed air.
The presentation of the Andalusian teams recently took place in Jerez. This edition sees Andalusia with 180 students, aged between 9 and 19, distributed among 30 teams from 27 educational centers.
The Cadiz centers participating in this project are IES Doñana from Sanlúcar de Barrameda, IES Tolosa from La Línea de la Concepción, IES Carlos Cano from Los Barrios, IES Saladillo from Algeciras, and IES Santo Domingo from El Puerto de Santa María.
The program is aimed at students in Compulsory Secondary Education, Baccalaureate, and Vocational Training. Each team, consisting of a maximum of six students, is guided by two teachers specialized in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields, who have received specific training to coordinate the project.
The technical challenge involves using advanced digital tools such as computer-aided design (CAD), aerodynamic simulation (CFD), and additive manufacturing through 3D printing. Beyond engineering, teams must operate like a professional racing team, managing their identity, planning, roles, communication, and seeking sponsorships, in addition to preparing a technical report.
The jury's evaluation extends beyond track speed, considering the technical quality of the prototype, creativity, internal organization, and the team's communication skills. This comprehensive approach seeks a balance among all factors to determine the final outcome.
According to information provided by the Territorial Delegation of Educational Development and Vocational Training, the program practically integrates various STEM disciplines, fostering scientific and technological vocations, and strengthening digital and transversal competencies. The celebration of the regional phase at the Circuito de Jerez-Ángel Nieto solidifies the province's position as a benchmark in this educational competition, linked to engineering and motor sports.
