The Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC) has recognized the quality of the Cádiz coastlines, granting this distinction to almost all candidacies submitted by the province. This achievement means eleven municipalities in Cádiz will boast this prestigious recognition, representing 4.3% of all flags raised in Spain.
In addition to the beaches, six marinas in the province have also been awarded the Blue Flag. These include Alcaidesa Marina in La Línea, and the marinas of Chipiona, Rota, Sancti Petri in Chiclana, Sotogrande, San Roque, and Puerto Sherry in El Puerto de Santa María.
“"Dunes act as a natural barrier against damage and storms and help prevent the sea from reaching promenades, homes, or other infrastructure located behind the beach. They are the sand reservoir on beaches."
The criteria for granting the Blue Flag are based on four fundamental pillars: environmental information and education, excellent water quality at all sampling points, environmental management, and safety and services. The ADEAC spokesperson, during the presentation of the list, emphasized the importance of conserving dunes and marine meadows, such as posidonia, to protect the coast from erosion and the effects of storms.
Spain maintains its global leadership in Blue Flags, with 677 awarded beaches, marking the best result since the initiative began in 1987. The Valencian Community leads by autonomous communities with 151 flags, followed by Andalusia with 143. Globally, 15% of all Blue Flag beaches are located in Spanish territory.
