Over fifty people have participated in the workshops organized by the Provincial Council of Cádiz as part of the European project 'Urban Rivers Resilience to Climate Change Adaptation' (Urraca). The sessions took place in La Barca de la Florida, Jimena, Ubrique, Villamartín, and Alcalá de los Gazules.
Under the slogan 'Your Municipality, Your River, Your Voice,' the workshops included political representatives, municipal staff, environmental groups, experts in environmental education, and other interested citizens. The aim was for residents, who live directly alongside urban rivers, to contribute their knowledge and experiences to complement existing technical information.
During the sessions, participants identified the main local climate risks, located vulnerable points on maps, and shared memories of past extreme episodes. They also established priorities for issues requiring attention.
The Provincial Council described the outcome of the workshops as "very positive," highlighting the "very active" citizen participation. This collected information is considered "very valuable" for the project team, as it helps identify climate risks threatening urban riverbeds and the most vulnerable points to climate variations.
The gathered information will be analyzed for the project's second phase, which will focus on finding solutions to adapt urban riverbeds using an ecosystemic approach, based on sustainability, balance, and environmental conservation.
The Urraca project, promoted by the Provincial Energy Agency of the Provincial Council of Cádiz, has a budget of approximately 210,000 euros, fully funded by European funds from the 'Horizon Europe' program. The Cádiz project was one of only two Spanish projects selected in this call.
