The municipal decision aims to close a debate that arose after the last COAC Participation Council, where the need for more days to develop the Group Competition was raised. However, the council has chosen to maintain the original calendar, arguing that historical precedents support this date.
One of the examples cited by the City Council is the 2016 Carnival, when the competition's final also took place on February 5th, the same date scheduled for the 2027 event. This stance has been well received by the city's brotherhood community.
“"It would have been an absolute aberration."
Juan Carlos Jurado, president of the Council of Brotherhoods and Confraternities, expressed his relief at the decision, noting that a delay in the Carnival would have further encroached upon Lent. Jurado emphasized the importance of mutual respect between traditions, stating that “the world of Carnival has always been respected, and the festival cannot be allowed to consume more days of Lent.”
The City Council has indicated its intention to work within the Participation Councils to adapt the competition as best as possible to the available dates, seeking solutions that do not alter the established schedule.
