This pact, sealed in the Gipuzkoan town, primarily aims to develop joint initiatives that highlight the figure of Juan Sebastián Elcano and the rich shared maritime heritage. The delegation from Cádiz, which visited Getaria for three days, sought to lay the groundwork for an alliance focused on naval history, sea culture, and gastronomy linked to marine products.
During their stay, the Cádiz delegation was received at the Getaria City Council by the mayor and members of the municipal corporation. At this institutional meeting, a letter from the mayor of Cádiz and a publication on the city's history were delivered. Additionally, meetings were held with representatives from the fishing, cultural, and business sectors of the region, including a visit to the Getaria Fishermen's Guild and the Maisor cannery, specializing in Cantabrian anchovies.
In the cultural sphere, the Cádiz representatives explored the Elkano Space, an interpretive center dedicated to the navigator, and the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum. They also met with a local gastronomic society to exchange experiences on culinary traditions associated with the maritime environment. A crucial aspect of the visit was naval heritage, with a stop in Pasajes de San Pedro to visit the Albaola Itsas Kultur Faktoria, where a replica of the 16th-century whaling ship San Juan is being built.
The Cádiz con Elcano association, supported by the Unicaja Foundation, frames this initiative within its mission to promote the maritime culture of the city and its surroundings. The entity takes as a symbolic reference the Spanish Navy training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano, built in Cádiz, which annually begins its training cruises from the Cádiz port. The intention is to advance joint projects that disseminate the shared maritime heritage and strengthen historical ties linked to the navigator's figure.
