Stalemate in Valcárcel Cádiz Project Over Pending Fund Authorization

The coalition criticizes the Regional Government of Andalusia and the mayor for the lack of response to the University of Cádiz's request for 12 million euros.

A municipal group denounces that the Regional Government of Andalusia has not authorized the use of 12 million euros in remaining funds requested by the University of Cádiz for the Valcárcel project.

The municipal group Adelante Izquierda Gaditana (AIG) has pointed out a new obstacle in the development of the Valcárcel Cádiz project. According to the party, the Regional Government of Andalusia has not granted authorization for the University of Cádiz (UCA) to use 12 million euros from remaining funds, which are necessary to advance the second phase of the works.
The spokesperson for AIG, David de la Cruz, has held both the Andalusian Government and the Local Executive responsible for the current situation. The coalition asserts that the request, submitted by the UCA in February, has yet to receive a response, jeopardizing the transformation of the former hospice into a teaching and research center.
The University of Cádiz had requested authorization to access the 12 million euros from remaining funds, of which four million would be allocated to adapting the building as a teaching and research center once the ongoing structural consolidation works are completed.
The Valcárcel Cádiz project aims for the comprehensive rehabilitation of this historic building. Last January, the president of the Regional Government, Juanma Moreno, visited the facilities to oversee the agreement among the involved administrations.
De la Cruz has questioned the involvement of the mayor of Cádiz, Bruno García, in defending the project before the Regional Government, reproaching him for the lack of public demand for a response from the regional administration. In his view, the City Council should push for speed to avoid delays in an action considered strategic for the city.
The spokesperson has also linked the situation of the Valcárcel project with other initiatives announced in the capital, such as the future City of Justice, whose foundation stone was laid in December without any work having yet commenced on the site.
Adelante Izquierda Gaditana reiterates its call for the Regional Government to immediately authorize the use of the remaining funds requested by the University, recalling that they had previously warned of potential financing difficulties.
