The Balearic Sailing Federation has managed to revalidate its title in the Spanish Optimist Team Championship, held in the Bay of Cádiz. The competition, organized by the Andalusian Sailing Federation in El Puerto de Santa María, concluded this Saturday with an unprecedented final showdown for first place between the two Balearic teams.
For four days, 60 sailors from eight autonomous communities competed in the waters of Cádiz. The westerly wind, with an average intensity of around 10 knots, allowed the full racing program to be completed, which included two qualifying rounds in a round-robin format. Ultimately, Balearics and the Valencian Community managed to place both their formations in the final phase.
The climax took place in the racing area between the breakwater of the Andalusian Sailing Federation and the Guadalete River. Both Balearic teams advanced to the final, mathematically securing the title for their region. In the decisive duel, the Balearics 2 team defeated Balearics 1, thus confirming the overall victory for the island federation.
This triumph marks the second consecutive title for Balearics in this discipline, following their win last year in Melilla. The Valencian Community, which had won on this same stage in 2022 against the Balearics, was eliminated from the final contention this time.
Team racing is a specific discipline within the Optimist class, a benchmark boat in youth sailing, combining technical and tactical aspects. Unlike individual regattas, this format requires coordination among the four team members, both in strategy and in managing positions on the race course.
The champion teams were formed by Daniela Trapero, Jorge Benítez, Pedro Burgués, Mary-Anne Osha, Jan Palou, Luca Nueschen, Emma Frau, and María de Lluc Bestard, under the coaching of Juan Manresa. Andalusia, as the host community, competed with several teams and came close to reaching the final phase.
The championship took place at the Specialized Center for Sports Training in Sailing Bay of Cádiz, home of the Andalusian Sailing Federation (FAV). The trophy ceremony was held in the ceremonial courtyard, with the collaboration of the City Council of El Puerto de Santa María, the Provincial Council of Cádiz, Puerto Sherry, and the Regional Government of Andalusia. The event reinforces the Bay of Cádiz as a key venue for national youth sailing competitions.
