The Territorial Delegation for Sustainability and Environment, responsible for the conservation of vulnerable ecosystems, has declared that the heavy machinery used for the Eurovelo repair is not endangering this bird. This statement comes after environmental groups raised concerns about the species during its breeding season.
An environmental group had previously denounced the situation, demanding a halt to the works and suggesting relocating the cycle path section. They argued that the presence of heavy machinery could destroy nests, crush eggs, or lead to nest abandonment, in addition to altering high-value dune habitats.
“"The presence of heavy machinery poses a direct risk of nest destruction, egg crushing, and abandonment of clutches. Furthermore, the affected dune systems constitute high-ecological-value habitats whose alteration can have negative consequences for both biodiversity and coastal stability."
Environmentalists also reminded that current legislation prohibits the destruction or alteration of protected species' habitats and their disturbance during the breeding period, with potential significant financial penalties. A municipal group also supported these requests, calling the action an "environmental aggression".
In response, a spokesperson for the Andalusian Government in Cádiz explained that the intervention on the Eurovelo is necessary due to recent storms that rendered the walkways inoperative due to sand accumulation. They added that Environmental agents have inspected the area and confirmed that existing nests are outside the scope of action, with no direct impact, according to technical reports.
Current work is limited to sand removal and infrastructure repair. Environmental actions, such as reforestation and dune stabilization measures, will be carried out once the nesting period concludes to ensure the species' protection. The Ministry acts at all times under technical and conservation criteria, balancing natural environment protection with the maintenance of public infrastructures affected by natural phenomena.
