This initiative is integrated into the Puerto Real City Council's Action Plan for Climate and Sustainable Energy, which includes specific measures to address energy poverty. The collaboration between the UCA and WPI has been consolidated over three years, focusing on technical projects with a strong social orientation.
Currently, a group of third-year WPI students is on a six-week stay at the UCA. Their mission is to analyze the energy poverty situation in the municipality of Puerto Real. The project is being supervised by professors Laura Romero and Pilar Monsalvete, and the final results will be presented at the end of May.
As part of their work, the students have visited the City Council to learn about municipal policies in this area and meet with local officials. The research aims to expand on a previous pilot study conducted in Puerto Real, which focused on economic vulnerability, energy inefficiency in homes, and the energy culture of the population.
To gather detailed information, the students are conducting street surveys, which will provide a more precise overview of the energy situation by district. The previous study had already revealed significant data on the existing problems in the area.
In addition to surveys and expert interviews, the project includes the creation of practical energy efficiency guides for households, which will be distributed among the public. Workshops will also be organized in municipal high schools to raise awareness among young people about responsible energy consumption.
Within the framework of this research, a meeting was held at the Social Services Center, with the participation of the Social Affairs councilwoman, Lorena Díaz, the municipal technical team, and representatives from EPSUVI, the Public Land and Housing Company. All parties encourage citizens to participate and collaborate in this project by responding to the online survey.
