The PHYTOWELFISH research project, focused on applying phytogenic nutraceuticals in aquaculture, has concluded its dissemination phase in educational centers across the Bay of Cádiz. This initiative has transferred knowledge to society regarding the use of plant-based compounds with relaxing and antioxidant properties, aiming to improve fish health and the quality of the final product for human consumption.
Led by researchers from the University Institute of Marine Research (INMAR) at the University of Cádiz, the project involved a multidisciplinary team of eleven experts in physiology, aquaculture pathology, food engineering and technology, and applied microbiology and molecular genetics.
To bring this knowledge closer to the public, the Sustainable Training Center organized 15 in-person workshops titled “The Secret Menu of Happy Fish.” Through this activity, 302 fifth and sixth-grade primary school students from schools in Puerto Real, San Fernando, El Puerto de Santa María, and Cádiz were educated.
The training proposal utilized active pedagogical methodologies, transforming complex scientific content into accessible experiences. The workshops included an audiovisual presentation explaining the benefits of phytogenic compound-based feeding and practical dynamics. The Reuseplay® methodology was employed to promote the circular economy, along with an educational kit and a memory game specifically designed to help students understand the role of these compounds in fish diets.
These sessions achieved a high degree of acceptance among participating students, who particularly valued the opportunity to learn about new aquaculture feeding methods based on plants and spices. The initiative also contributed to the dissemination of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially those related to zero hunger, quality education, and life below water.
The PHYTOWELFISH project (PCM_00029) was co-financed by the Ministry of University, Research and Innovation of the Junta de Andalucía and the European Union, through Next Generation EU funds, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. With this action, the University of Cádiz reinforces its commitment to knowledge transfer and scientific dissemination in sustainable aquaculture.
