The event, held in the campus library, saw the participation of members of the university community and representatives from the Puerto Real City Council. This initiative is framed within the program of the 2026 University Book Week, organized by the Vice-Rectorate for Sustainability and Culture.
This year's edition is dedicated to the centenary of the birth of the writer from Jerez, José Manuel Caballero Bonald (1926-2021), a prominent figure of the Generation of '50 and recipient of the Cervantes Prize. UCA awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2004.
The public and continuous reading of excerpts from Don Quijote de la Mancha, Miguel de Cervantes' seminal work, is a tradition maintained by the university every April 23 to mark Book Day. On this occasion, the leadership of the University of Cádiz led the participation, alongside faculty, students, and technical and administrative staff.
In addition to the reading, the 2026 University Book Week includes other activities, such as the exhibition José Manuel Caballero Bonald. The adventure of writing at the Humanities Library of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, and a commemorative event at the Jerez campus related to his honorary doctorate appointment.
The program benefits from the collaboration of various institutions and entities, including the Jerez City Council, the Caballero Bonald Foundation, and the University Research Institute for Sustainable Social Development (INDESS), among others. These activities reinforce the university library's role as a cultural meeting point and a space for participation for the entire academic community.
