Last Sunday, the Prioral de San Sebastián in Puerto Real opened its doors for brothers and devotees to visit the image before its departure. The day included a Eucharist at noon and concluded with the prayer of the five wounds in the afternoon, in an emotionally charged event.
“"It is not a definitive farewell, but a 'see you soon' full of hope, trust, and love."
This restoration project, considered one of the most important in the brotherhood's recent history, was approved in an extraordinary chapter meeting in March 2025. The goal is to ensure that future generations can continue to find solace in the image.
The person in charge of carrying out the work is the restorer Esperanza Fernández Cañero, a graduate in Fine Arts and a conservator of artworks. Her workshop in Seville will be the destination of the carving, after receiving approval from the Diocese of Cádiz and Ceuta. Fernández Cañero has experience in restoring other religious images in the province.
The restoration of the Nazarene of Puerto Real, created by Ramón Chaveli Carreres in 1941, is a major undertaking that will address not only the polychromy but also a comprehensive intervention. The image has only been restored twice before, in the 1970s and more than 20 years ago, neither of which was as complete as the current one. The image is expected to return to the brotherhood's chapel in early 2027.
To finance this ambitious project, the Brotherhood has launched the campaign 'Entre todos, con Él' (Together, with Him), inviting brothers and devotees to collaborate financially.
