Parking scarcity is a constant concern for residents of San Fernando, a situation exacerbated by the growth of the local vehicle fleet. Faced with this problem, the local government has launched a series of initiatives to optimize existing spaces and offer short- and medium-term solutions.
Among the most notable actions is the network of tactical parking lots. The next addition will be a lot of 210 spaces next to the Camposoto health center, at the corner of Milongas and Granaínas streets. This project, tendered for over 514,000 euros, will include spaces for people with reduced mobility and motorcycles, as well as an ambulance area.
Additionally, the tender for a tactical parking lot on San Juan Bosco avenue, between San Vicente and San Nicolás streets, is imminent. This plot of over 4,200 square meters will accommodate about 230 spaces. This project, with a budget of 530,000 euros, will formalize a space already used informally by residents.
Large urban projects will also contribute to the creation of new spaces. The La Magdalena development, with an investment exceeding 12 million euros, includes two tactical parking lots in the future park and another in the El Zaporito area, adding about 600 spaces. Works on the new athletics stadium in Camposoto will include a 200-space parking lot, and the construction of the summer pool on Ronda del Estero will add another 225 spaces.
These seven new lots, totaling over 1,500 spaces, join the existing network of tactical parking lots. Since 2023, over 3.2 million euros from European funds have been invested in establishing three parking lots on San Juan Bosco avenue, Rafael Alberti avenue, and Ronda del Estero, which already provide over 400 spaces. Furthermore, a 12.7 million euro loan approved last Holy Wednesday will allocate one million to continue this expansion.
Beyond tactical parking, other significant projects such as the second phase of the Pery Junquera avenue duplication, with an investment of almost 1.8 million euros, will optimize the existing lot at the confluence with the Andalucía neighborhood for about 200 spaces. The remodeling of Duque de Arcos avenue also foresees an increase, albeit smaller, in parking spaces.
The local government has enabled various parking areas in recent years, including Montigny street, Prolongación Santa María, the Andalucía neighborhood, Obusera street, Victoria Eugenia square, the rear of the Isla de León residential area, the hockey field, Camposoto beach, and the Janer commercial park. New areas in Neptuno square and San Quintín will be added soon. With all these initiatives, the city will exceed 4,200 parking spaces.
The ultimate goal of these actions is to foster a more sustainable and pedestrian-friendly city. The new tactical parking lots are strategically located about 500 meters from key points, allowing citizens to walk in about five minutes and traverse the town in approximately 15 minutes, thus promoting car use for arrival and walking for movement within the city.
