The controversial figure of Juan Carlos Aragón Becerra, a Cádiz Carnival author, has become embroiled in a new controversy following the final sentence convicting him of mistreatment towards one of his former partners. This development has prompted the Río San Pedro Neighborhood Platform, which organized a tribute to the author in May 2021, to request the removal of the Captain Veneno silhouette adorning the facade of the neighborhood's Civic Center from the Puerto Real City Council.
The tribute, coinciding with the second anniversary of Aragón's death, also acknowledged his work as a teacher at the IES La Algaida. The neighborhood platform, which has paused its activities since July last year, funded the placement of the commemorative poster with its own resources. However, after the sentence was publicized and the facts acknowledged by the author himself, residents have expressed their desire for the tribute to be removed.
In a statement, the neighborhood platform expressed its sorrow upon discovering the author's criminal record, whom they consider an "extraordinary carnival poet." Nevertheless, they emphasize the need for "zero tolerance for violence against women" and believe that, in light of the criminal acts, "said poster is now out of place in our neighborhood."
