The initiative, led by the University Institute of Marine Research (INMAR) of the University of Cádiz, has completed its outreach phase in educational centers across the province. During this campaign, 15 workshops were developed for fifth and sixth-grade Primary students, aiming to introduce them to scientific advancements in aquaculture and animal welfare.
The workshops, titled The Secret Menu of Happy Fish, were held in schools in Puerto Real, San Fernando, El Puerto de Santa María, and Cádiz. They explained the PHYTOWELFISH project in an adapted format, detailing how research seeks to improve fish health and the quality of products intended for consumption.
The PHYTOWELFISH project focuses on applying phytogenic nutraceuticals in aquaculture to enhance animal welfare and meat quality. These plant-derived compounds, possessing relaxing and antioxidant properties, are being studied by a multidisciplinary team of eleven INMAR researchers, aligning with the University of Cádiz's research lines on sustainable aquaculture.
For the workshop implementation, the Sustainable Training Center designed sessions combining audiovisual resources and practical activities. Notable methodologies included Reuseplay®, which uses recycled materials to introduce circular economy concepts, and a specific didactic kit along with a memory game to reinforce learning about the compounds' role in fish diets.
The campaign reached 302 students and also served to disseminate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically those related to zero hunger, quality education, and life below water. The PHYTOWELFISH (PCM_00029) project is co-financed by the Ministry of University, Research and Innovation of the Junta de Andalucía and Next Generation EU funds from the European Union.
