Agents from the Seprona of the Civil Guard, based in El Puerto de Santa María, along with officials from the Fisheries Inspection of the Junta de Andalucía, have conducted checks on fishing activities in the Bay of Cadiz. During the operation, two individuals were identified engaging in professional fishing with small gear without possessing the necessary licenses for such activity.
As a result of the intervention, administrative reports were filed for violations of fishing regulations. Furthermore, the illegally caught fish and the gear used, specifically a set net over 1,000 meters in length, were temporarily seized.
The seized items were transferred by Fisheries Inspection personnel to the Center for Research and Cultivation of Marine Species (CICEM) 'El Toruño', in El Puerto, for destruction according to established procedures.
This action addresses the concerns raised by various groups of aquaculturists and shellfishers in the area, who report that the illegal activities of poachers and illegal fishermen are impacting their livelihoods. They emphasize that professional fishing is subject to a legal system of regulation and health control, and that operating outside the law jeopardizes sustainable development and consumer health.
