The mayor of the city, José María Román, announced that this figure even surpasses that registered in August of the previous year, when the population exceeded 250,000 inhabitants. In July, 7,605,400 kilograms of waste were collected, representing an increase of over 180,000 kilograms compared to the same month last year.
The population in July of this year was also higher than in July 2024 (233,756 inhabitants and 7,029,060 kilograms of waste collected) and higher than estimated for the August months of previous years, exceeding August 2025 by almost 2,000 people and August 2024 by more than 10,000.
The mayor indicated that, in addition to the annual increase in registered residents, the population growth is also due to holiday visitors. This data is corroborated by hotel occupancy, which according to HORECA exceeded 92.4 percent in July, above the provincial average of 88.3 percent, and following the opening of new hotel establishments.
Román stated that the objective is to maintain a population level consistent with the tourist destination and the city's capacity, while simultaneously increasing public services such as hospitality, cleaning, and infrastructure. The mayor also requested assistance from the Junta for pending matters.
Regarding waste, a general increase in all types has been recorded, with the exception of glass. The mayor called for public awareness regarding glass recycling, highlighting the installation of more selective containers in the municipality, especially in the coastal area.
