The co-spokesperson for the Municipal Group AxSí, Lolo Picardo, has voiced the party's unease regarding the recent collapse of a significant number of niches at the Municipal Cemetery. The incident, which occurred last Friday, necessitated the cordoning off of an entire block of the cemetery for safety, generating "logical concern" among workers, visitors, and families of the deceased.
AxSí recalls that they had previously warned about the deterioration of various areas of the cemetery in November 2025, when they submitted a motion to the Plenary demanding a complete technical inspection and an urgent action plan. At that time, they cautioned that superficial maintenance was insufficient and that comprehensive intervention and permanent surveillance were required.
In light of the current situation, AxSí demands that the municipal government conduct an "urgent and exhaustive" technical assessment of the general condition of all structures within the Municipal Cemetery, including niches, columbaria, and walls, to ensure the safety of everyone accessing the premises.
The Andalucist party emphasizes the heritage, cultural, and tourist significance of the San Fernando Cemetery, highlighting it as a place of homage for figures like Camarón de la Isla, whose tomb attracts thousands of visitors annually. Therefore, they urge the City Council to act with "maximum diligence, transparency, and responsibility."
AxSí concludes that the incident should prompt a comprehensive review of the cemetery and prevent future occurrences, reminding that public administrations have a duty to anticipate problems when warned.
