The Local Government Board has greenlit the expediente to initiate the tender for the construction of Chiclana's new municipal swimming pool. The project has a base budget of €6,414,403.58 (VAT included) and is part of the Integrated Action Plan ‘The City that Flows’, funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for the 2021-2027 programming period.
Mayor José María Román, accompanied by the delegate for European Funds, Ana González, and the head of Sports, Isabel Butrón, announced that once awarded, the works must be completed within a maximum of 24 months. The project includes the construction of the indoor pool on a 7,735 square meter plot in La Longuera, which will also feature a green area, a calisthenics park, and photovoltaic canopies.
Román highlighted that this will be the city's second municipal pool, responding to public demand. He recalled that the first pool was built by his administration but its management was later awarded by the PP Government. The new facility aims to serve the La Longuera area, near the IES Ciudad de Hércules and Pablo Ruiz Picasso high schools.
The Mayor thanked the drafting team from the Municipal Projects Office, led by Juan Antonio de la Mata, and the technicians from the Sports Delegation. He emphasized that the project exemplifies the municipal government's teamwork and is financed by European funds and its own resources, following rejections from the Regional Government (Junta) and the Provincial Council (Diputación).
Furthermore, Román expressed his satisfaction with the collaboration of the Chiclana Water Polo Club in drafting the project to meet competition requirements, clarifying that the pool will be for general public use, not exclusively for water polo. The pool is expected to be a reality within 24 months of the works commencing, fulfilling an electoral promise.
The Chiclana City Council will also undertake other actions under the Integrated Action Plan, such as the river park near La Carabina, the expansion of the Alameda del Río, the ‘Cerro del Castillo’ scenic space, urban regeneration of Barrio Nuevo, the renovation of the Football Stadium, improvements at CEIP Isabel La Católica and El Trovador primary schools, the Municipal Training School, the rehabilitation of the Cuatro Vientos winery house for cultural and social use, and programs for economic reactivation and training.
