This initiative, promoted by the Department of Culture, seeks to involve the entire population, both from the Historic Quarter and the more modern areas, in the care and aesthetic improvement of their streets and buildings. Vouchers to collect the whitewash can be requested at the Francisco Delicado Municipal House of Culture, and the registration deadline for the contest is Friday, April 24.
The free distribution of whitewash highlights the importance of this practice in the popular architecture of Martos and in Andalusian construction tradition in general. Whitewashing not only contributes to the municipality's image but also helps preserve an architectural heritage that defines the local identity. With this measure, the City Council encourages residents to keep alive a custom that transcends mere aesthetics, connecting with the history and culture of the place.
The contest will evaluate various aspects, such as the cleanliness of the facade and its surroundings, the respectful treatment of patinas, the use of whitewash as a traditional element, and embellishment with potted plants and flowers. In the Historic Quarter, special emphasis will be placed on respecting the characteristics of Martos' traditional urban planning and architecture, elements that give uniqueness to each corner.
With 26 editions behind it, this contest has become an unmissable event in the Martos calendar, mobilizing numerous residents every spring in a collective effort of local pride. The City Council's objective is for all Martos residents to feel actively involved in the care and beautification of their immediate surroundings, for their own enjoyment and the recognition of the entire community.
