The Environment Department of the Villa del Río City Council has shared recommendations from the Junta de Andalucía to prevent the West Nile Virus, focusing on protection against bites and control of breeding sites.

The Villa del Río City Council, through its Environment Department, has disseminated guidelines issued by the Junta de Andalucía for the prevention of the West Nile Virus. The instructions focus on two main areas: individual protection against mosquito bites and the elimination of breeding grounds that promote their reproduction.
Citizens are urged to control breeding sites by avoiding stagnant water accumulation in any type of container, such as pots, toys, water troughs, or waterlogged areas in patios, terraces, and gardens. Weekly checks of these areas are recommended. For pools, ponds, washbasins, and fountains, if emptying the water is not possible, methods like chlorination, protective structures such as tarpaulins or mosquito nets, or promoting water movement are suggested.
For livestock farms, frequent renewal of water in animal troughs and minimizing puddles, leaks, or broken pipes are advised. Regarding protection against bites, wearing light-colored clothing that covers as much of the body as possible is recommended, along with the application of authorized body repellents on exposed areas, following label instructions, especially for children under 3, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. Repellents should avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, and wounds.
Other preventive measures include using window screens, keeping windows closed if screens are unavailable, avoiding strong odors like perfumes, and turning off unnecessary lights. Home prevention, by avoiding water accumulation and adopting protective measures, is key to reducing mosquito presence and safeguarding public health.
