The streets, squares, and corners of Lanjarón have been filled with color for the celebration of the May Crosses, a festival that began last Friday and will continue until Sunday, May 3. A total of 24 crosses are distributed throughout the municipality, keeping the essence and authenticity of this tradition alive in this unique enclave of the Granada Alpujarra.
The crosses, decorated with flowers, shawls, ceramics, and other traditional elements, transform each space into a unique place where devotion and festive spirit merge. Both residents and tourists can enjoy a walking route, exploring the streets of Lanjarón and discovering the uniqueness of each neighborhood and each cross.
This festive atmosphere is made possible by the dedication of local residents, associations, and groups who, selflessly, ensure the continuity of this tradition across generations. Many of the crosses offer typical regional products, such as ham, cheese, fritters, chocolate, and traditional sweets, enriching the visit with a gastronomic and cultural experience.
“"The May Crosses are one of Lanjarón's most special celebrations because they represent the unity and pride our neighbors feel for their traditions. Each cross reflects the hard work, enthusiasm, and affection of many people who keep the essence of our town alive."
Representatives from the Lanjarón City Council, including the mayor and the festival councilor, along with other council members, have visited each of the crosses to acknowledge and thank the effort and dedication of the participants. During this visit, the council presented each cross with a ham shoulder and a bottle of wine as a token of gratitude. A territorial delegate from the Junta de Andalucía was also present.
The music and the constant flow of people visiting the crosses make this celebration one of the most outstanding events of the Alpujarra spring. The most authentic value of Lanjarón's May Crosses lies in their popular character, shaped by the affection and effort of the residents themselves.
