Almería, Among Provinces with Lower Mortality Despite Shorter Life Expectancy

The Andalusian province records a significantly lower death rate than the national average, driven by a younger population.

The province of Almería is positioned as one of the regions with the lowest mortality rates in Spain, a peculiarity attributed to its young population, despite not leading in life expectancy.

Recent data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) reveal that Almería has a crude mortality rate of 7.41 deaths per thousand inhabitants, a figure notably lower than the national average of 8.87. This statistic places it among the provinces with the lowest rates in the country, only surpassed by Madrid, the Balearic Islands, Ceuta, and Melilla.
The main reason behind this apparent contradiction does not lie in a longer lifespan of its inhabitants, but in the demographic structure of the province. Almería maintains a considerably younger population compared to other areas in the north and interior of the peninsula, which reduces the total number of annual deaths.

"The main key is not solely in healthcare or life expectancy, but in the demographic structure."

The crude mortality rate counts deaths per thousand inhabitants without adjusting for the age of the population. This means that provinces with a higher proportion of elderly people, such as Ourense, Zamora, or Lugo, record mortality rates that almost double those of Almería, simply due to having an older population.
The presence of an active working population and labor immigration have contributed to Almería maintaining a younger demographic structure. This factor significantly alters statistics, differentiating it from provinces with a strong aging population like León or Castilla y León.
It is essential to distinguish between the crude mortality rate and life expectancy. While the former is strongly influenced by the average age of the population, life expectancy measures the average number of years a person lives. Thus, a province can have a low annual mortality without necessarily being the longest-lived in the country.
