This Wednesday, April 8, the city of Almería marks a significant milestone: the 75th anniversary of the canonical coronation of its patron saint, the Virgen del Mar. For this special occasion, the brotherhood has organized an intense day of veneration that has drawn hundreds of Almerians to the Santuario de la Virgen del Mar since early morning.
One of the most notable aspects of this celebration is the image of the Virgen del Mar, which is presented fully dressed, with mantle and skirt, a sight not seen since the early 1980s. This recreation of the ancient attire offers a unique and historic image for the faithful and visitors.
The program of events for the anniversary includes veneration that will last from 8:30 AM until approximately 8:30 PM. Throughout the day, masses will be held at 9 AM and 10 AM, and bells will ring in all city churches at 12:00 PM.
At 8:00 PM, a historic presentation will take place: the new face covering (rostrillo) of the Virgen del Mar will be blessed, a jewel crafted by the Jerez silversmith workshop el Oribe, marking a new milestone in the heritage of Almería's patron saint.
Prior to the extraordinary procession of the Virgen del Mar, scheduled for Sunday after a mass in the Plaza Vieja, a triduum will be held. From Thursday, April 9, to Saturday, April 11, a mass will take place each day at 7:30 PM. On Thursday, parishes from Almería will attend; on Friday, military authorities and state security forces; and on Saturday, brotherhoods and confraternities from the city.
