The second week of the 27th Summer Courses at the University of Almería (UAL) continues its program, taking knowledge beyond the main campus. The initiative aims to connect research, innovation, and heritage with current societal challenges.
Following the courses that began the previous week, six new seminars have been held in Almería, El Ejido, Vélez Rubio, and Cuevas del Almanzora. These courses, which bring together hundreds of students and speakers from various fields, reinforce the decentralized nature of UAL's educational offerings.
In Vélez Rubio, the course 'Historical Recreation and Representation: Experience of the Past' analyzes the rise of historical reenactments from an academic and heritage perspective. Course director Alfredo Ureña highlighted the importance of grounding these representations in historical rigor without sacrificing creativity.
Meanwhile, in El Ejido, the seminar 'Agricultural Revolution and Social Mobilization at the Origin of the Sea of Plastic' examines the historical and social process that transformed the former Campo de Dalías into a global agricultural leader. Director Mónica Fernández Amador emphasized the significant role of farmers and entrepreneurs in this economic transformation.
Cuevas del Almanzora hosts the edition of the workshop 'Contemporary Illustration and Recovery of Traditional Techniques' at the Emilio Sdun Museum-Workshop. This course revives historical printing and artistic editing procedures. Co-director Adoración Sánchez noted the aim for graphic work to be the core of the book, while Antonio Alcaraz stressed the unique opportunity to work with traditional typography.
In the capital, the course 'Almería, a Benchmark in Genetic Improvement Applied to Productive Systems' focuses on intensive horticulture. Specialists will analyze how plant genetic improvement has led to more productive and resistant varieties, incorporating tools like gene editing.
Another prominent course in Almería is 'Innovation in the Integrated Water Cycle from Almería,' addressing water management challenges amid climate change and water scarcity. The program includes talks on artificial intelligence, reuse, and desalination, with technical visits to key facilities.
Finally, 'You Too Are an Astronomer VI' offers a practical immersion into astronomy, culminating in a visit to the Calar Alto Observatory for nocturnal observations with professional telescopes.
