The fire, which is progressing favorably in the east but is concerningly advancing towards El Marchal, has forced the evacuation of around a thousand people. The flames have scorched approximately 4,000 hectares.
Several of the deceased victims were found inside vehicles attempting to leave the area affected by the flames. Four of the eight injured are in very serious condition.
Given the scale of the catastrophe, the Junta de Andalucía has declared three days of official mourning. A large deployment of personnel from Infoca, the Unidad Militar de Emergencias, and other security and emergency services are working in the area.
