The Sahara Friends Association of Almería has issued an urgent appeal to find two families to complete the quota for the 'Vacaciones en Paz 2026' program. The arrival of minors from the Sahrawi refugee camps in Tindouf, Algeria, is scheduled for June 30th, and the organization is working against the clock to ensure accommodation for approximately 25 children.
This program, now in its 27th edition, aims to allow the children to escape the extreme desert conditions, where temperatures can exceed 50 degrees Celsius. During their stay in the province of Almería, the children receive healthcare, balanced nutrition, and the opportunity to experience daily life that is exceptional in their homeland.
The association emphasizes the urgency of the situation, as the lack of these two families could jeopardize the program's full development in the province. They are calling on the public to consider opening their homes to these minors during July and August.
Families who have participated in previous editions highlight the profound emotional impact and the bonds formed, relationships that often extend beyond the summer. "Those who experience it agree that it leaves a deep mark," the organization notes.
Requirements for interested families include being under 65 years of age, not being in international adoption processes, having no prior convictions for sexual offenses, and committing to the children's return to their camps at the end of the summer. The program is supported by institutions such as the Almería City Council and the Provincial Council, as well as municipalities like Roquetas de Mar.
