The Independent and Civil Servants Trade Union (CSIF) Almería has reported a new assault on a worker at the Almería prison. This event, which occurred on Sunday afternoon, brings the total number of violent incidents against staff at the El Acebuche Penitentiary Center to three within the last month.
According to the union, the assault escalated from a prior altercation earlier in the day, during which the inmate had already verbally abused the official. In the afternoon, when instructed to leave the shower area, the prisoner lunged at the worker, punching him until he fell to the ground and breaking his glasses. Other inmates had to intervene to restrain the aggressor until more officials arrived.
“"We warn of the serious deterioration in security, with more violence, lack of staff, and overcrowding. We demand urgent measures such as staff reinforcement and the transfer of at least one hundred inmates."
The union emphasizes that this attack is not an isolated incident, citing a previous assault on an official during Holy Week and an attempted assault on a teacher. These events, according to CSIF, indicate a worrying increase in violence and conflict, as well as a concerning loss of control in certain modules of the penitentiary center.
CSIF recalled that on the 8th of this month, its representatives requested the Secretary General of Penitentiary Institutions, during his visit to the center, to immediately transfer at least one hundred inmates to reduce existing pressure and allow surveillance tasks to be carried out under proper conditions. Furthermore, the union demands the transfer of the aggressive inmate to another penitentiary center, along with urgent measures including staff reinforcement, mandatory self-defense training, and the provision of Taser guns, arguing that the current situation is a direct consequence of overcrowding, understaffing, lack of resources, and insufficient training.
