The police operation began thanks to an alert from an off-duty officer, who observed an individual next to a rented van parked near the mouth of the Andarax River and a parking lot close to the beach in Almería. Initial information suggested the vehicle might contain a large quantity of gasoline canisters.
A patrol from the Citizen Security Brigade was dispatched to the location and found the van, rented from a local company. Upon inspection, 121 25-liter gasoline canisters were seized, totaling over 3,000 liters of fuel. Additionally, a zodiac-type boat, an 8 HP Yamaha engine, inflators, and provisions were found, suggesting potential use for illicit activities.
The Forensic Police conducted a technical-police inspection that allowed the identification of the vehicle's renter, who was arrested as the alleged perpetrator of a catastrophic risk crime. This type of mass fuel transport in unapproved containers and without security, in a public area, poses a significant danger.
Investigators link this modus operandi, known as “petaqueo” in the context of drug trafficking, to the logistical supply of vessels used in criminal activities, such as “narcolanchas.” This practice allows these boats to remain at sea for extended periods, avoiding detection. The seized fuel and perishable items were destroyed, and the detainee, who has a record for robbery with violence and intimidation, threats, and drug trafficking, has been handed over to the Investigating Courts of Almería.
