The historic El Morato Flamenco Club, based in a cave in Almería's Quemadero neighborhood, has commemorated its 45th anniversary of uninterrupted activity. The celebration focused on dance, one of the fundamental pillars of flamenco art, declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010.
The series of recitals, which took place during April and May, featured prominent figures such as Inés de Inés, Tamara López, and Rafael Jiménez. The closing performance was given by the young Almerian dancer Suleima Fornieles, who returned to her hometown for this special occasion.
“"Four recitals that managed to hang the coveted 'sold out' sign; with the considerable and gratifying attendance of young people who are gradually ensuring the generational relay of this ancient music."
The career of Suleima Fornieles, self-taught and vocational, includes training with masters such as Chelo Ruiz and María Guardia “Mariquilla”, which has allowed her to develop refined technique and a great capacity for emotional transmission. Her performance, accompanied by Cristo Heredia on vocals, José Bellido on guitar, and Mª Ángeles “La Hermanita” on palmas, was described as captivating and full of drama.
The club, which began its flamenco journey in April 1981, has been recognized with various distinctions, including the flags of Europe, Spain, Andalusia, and Almería, for its intense cultural work. During the event, presenter Antonio F. García “Niño de las Cuevas” dedicated a taranto to the mayor of Bacares, Encarnación Zaguirre, in an emotional tribute to the region's mining history.
