A fire broke out in a lot located at the fork of Calle Pósito, at the foot of Cerro de San Cristóbal and near Plaza Vieja in Almería, highlighting the concerns of residents from the El Santo and Casco Histórico neighborhoods. The incident occurred on the night of Monday, August 17th, around 10:50 PM.
The swift response of the Firefighters prevented the flames, which ignited after a Giants and Big-Heads event in front of the Almería City Hall, from spreading beyond the lot. Witnesses reported hearing "several explosions due to flammable material burning," but there were no injuries.
The neighborhood platform of El Santo-Cerro de San Cristóbal has reiterated their weeks-long warnings about an individual with "apparent drug addiction problems" who has occupied the ruins of a building on the fire-affected lot. Residents describe the accumulation of "waste," "clothes hanging out," "mattresses on the floor," "trash in the surroundings," and "bad odors."
Residents deem this situation unacceptable in an area intended for tourism and situated near important monuments like the Alcazaba and the Murallas de Jairán. They urge that "the seriousness of the public safety and unsanitary problem in the area should not be underestimated," citing "altercations," "thefts from tourists and residents," and "vandalism to cars."
