The former goalkeeper, who defended the goal for UD Almería, has revealed in a recent interview the reasons behind his decision to leave the sport at 33. According to his statements, the last years of his career were particularly demanding, culminating in deep mental exhaustion that prompted him to leave the playing fields.
Despite having played for renowned clubs such as Real Betis, Atlético de Madrid, and Osasuna, and having defended the colors of local teams like Poli Almería and Almería CF, the psychological toll became unbearable. His retirement in 2004, after two particularly tough seasons, ended a career that began unexpectedly.
“"I was mentally exhausted; those last two championships were extremely tough."
The nickname Barbero, which accompanied him throughout his career, has its roots in family tradition, inherited from his grandfather, who was a barber for the miners of Enix and much of the Poniente Almeriense. Despite his retirement, the former player confesses that he still feels like a footballer, even participating in veteran matches where, curiously, he plays as a winger and scores goals.
