The scientific, medical, and gastronomic community mourns the loss of Dr. Alejandro Bonetti Munnigh (Santo Domingo, 1952-Almería, 2026), a brilliant academic whose passing leaves an unfillable void in medicine, teaching, and the promotion of healthy living, particularly in the Levante Almeriense region.
After earning his Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Granada with honors (Sobresaliente Cum Laude and Extraordinary Award), his career established him as a leading figure in Internal Medicine, Digestive Diseases, and Endocrinology, becoming a member of the Royal Academy of Medicine and Surgery of Eastern Andalusia (RAMAO).
Dr. Bonetti was a pioneer in the study of the microbiota and the gut-brain axis, promoting culinary medicine and advocating for fresh products and olive oil against ultra-processed foods.
His connection to the province of Almería was profound; he resided in Huércal-Overa, where his children were born. For over thirty years, he served as Head of Digestive Diseases at La Inmaculada Hospital and directed the Colon Cancer Prevention Unit, balancing his clinical work with the Directorship of Education for the Official College of Physicians of Almería, which awarded him its Gold Medal.
He was the official speaker for the Huércal-Overa festivities in 2015 and promoted educational projects at the University of Almería. His posthumous work, 'Mediterranean Culinary Medicine. The Health of the 21st Century,' will cement his legacy with the spirit of Almería.
“"The mark he leaves on our hospital and the entire region is simply indelible. Beyond his brilliant and rigorous work, his figure stands out for his extraordinary social commitment."
La Inmaculada Hospital expressed its sorrow, calling him "one of the most distinguished figures in the medicine of our province." The Northern Almería Healthcare Management Area conveyed its deepest condolences, bidding farewell to "a brilliant scientist, an exceptional communicator of unwavering vocation, and, above all, a gentleman of medicine with an unforgettable laugh."
