In a landscape dominated by mass production, the province of Almería boasts a unique tailor specializing in historical clothing. This artisan, originally from Albanchez, has spent over a decade preserving a craft that combines manual skill with a deep understanding of history.
A passion for tailoring and history led this professional to specialize in creating costumes for historical reenactments and cultural events. His work extends beyond the province of Almería and other regions of Spain, having also garnered international attention.
“"It's curious because I come from a family of tailors, but I haven't known any. I have documented tailors in my family since the late 16th century, but it ended just three generations ago."
Since 2013, when he participated in the historical reenactment of the Paz de las Alpujarras in Padules, the tailor has refined his technique, emphasizing the importance of historical documentation as the first step in each creation. His workshop, located in Albanchez, has become a reference point for associations and reenactment groups.
The uniqueness of his craft has made him the only registered tailor in the entire province of Almería. His commissions are not limited to national borders, as he has received orders from places like Malta, France, and the Czech Republic, highlighting the international recognition of his work.
“"Tailoring is a complex profession. It's an architecture whose materials are flat and the building site is the body, which has volume. You have to achieve the structure to adapt it to the body. Right now, I am the only registered tailor in the entire province of Almería."
The artisan champions the cultural significance of historical clothing, viewing it as a way to preserve collective memory. He stresses that, in the face of mechanization, manual work can only compete on quality, and he emphasizes the need to keep these crafts alive for future generations. He has actively collaborated in workshops and cultural events, sharing his knowledge and passion.
