The assembly hall of the Association of Journalists – Press Association of Almería has been named after Juan Martínez Martín 'Martimar', acknowledging his career.
The assembly hall of the Association of Journalists – Press Association of Almería (AP-APAL), located in Plaza de San Sebastián, pays tribute to the historic Almerian journalist Juan Martínez Martín 'Martimar'. The hall will now bear his name in recognition of his distinguished career and his fundamental role in the province's journalism.
The naming ceremony was attended by the honoree's family, including his children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter, as well as members of the AP-APAL board, associated journalists, and industry representatives, including the director of La Voz de Almería, Pedro Manuel de la Cruz.
The event highlighted the figure of the man who was chief editor of La Voz de Almería for over three decades, founder and director of La Hoja del Lunes de Almería, and a key player in the reconstruction and consolidation of the provincial Press Association.
“
"The act was to 'settle a historical debt of love, respect, and gratitude' towards someone who dedicated his life to the profession and the defense of the journalistic collective."
The president of AP-APAL, José Manuel Bretones, recalled 'Martimar's' decisive role in the association's recovery in the 1940s and his long tenure as vice-president, emphasizing that the space now carries his legacy.
Pedro Manuel de la Cruz, director of LA VOZ, advocated for the value of local and proximity journalism, noting how provincial media reflect not only what happens but also 'what happens to us,' a philosophy he linked to 'Martimar's' career.
“
"Reading Martimar's chronicles is immersing oneself in a significant era of this land's journalism. His mark, like that of unique individuals, remains in memory."
“
"They used to say that the lives of the dead reside in the memory of the living, and this act fits that idea perfectly."
Juan Martínez Martín 'Martimar' (Almería, 1905-1985) had an extensive career with publications such as La Crónica Meridional, El Mediterráneo, Heraldo de Almería, Yugo, and La Voz de Almería, where he served as chief editor for over thirty years. He also wrote under the pseudonyms 'Martimar' and 'Volapié', the latter particularly associated with bullfighting criticism.
His contribution to the Almería Press Association was crucial; he participated in its reorganization after the Civil War and was a driving force behind La Hoja del Lunes de Almería. He also promoted social improvements for journalists and fostered the collective's cultural life.
