As is customary each year around this time, José Ayala's farm, located in Campo de Níjar, has been the first to start harvesting watermelons. The planting, carried out on December 13, 2025, successfully concluded this past Thursday, April 9, when Agroiris harvesters began their work.
This farmer from Alboloduy, whose farm is located past Ruescas, is known for being the first to supply markets with this prized fruit. Early watermelons from Almería are valued for their challenging production and high quality, especially at a time when Central Europe still experiences cold temperatures.
“"This year they are even sweeter than last year, they have 14 brix degrees."
José Ayala's experience has been key to the success of this harvest. Earlier this year, the farmer accurately predicted the harvest date, emphasizing the importance of March's climate for plant development. The combination of good planting, favorable weather conditions, and the producer's dedication have been fundamental.
“"My wish is that the person who tries one of my watermelons says how sweet it is, how sweet. I give them a lot of care and love so that these watermelons are special because I really love my job."
In addition to quality, production has also seen a significant increase. While last year yielded 50,000 kilos per hectare, this season is expected to reach 65,000. José Ayala highlights the importance of factors such as humidity, ventilation, foliar nutrition, and pest control, always using products registered in the European Union to ensure food safety.
With the first phase of the harvest underway, José Ayala is already planning the watermelon's regrowth, expecting a second harvest for the first week of June, if conditions allow. This process involves thorough cleaning of the greenhouse and specific soil care to ensure the quality of future fruits.
