The Guardia Civil proceeded with the arrest of a person who was allegedly attempting to introduce narcotic substances into the El Acebuche penitentiary center in Almería. The incident occurred as the individual was preparing to access an intimate communication, known as a conjugal visit.
According to the union Tu Abandono Me Puede Matar (TAMPM), which holds a majority representation in the Almería prison, the interception was made possible by the diligent actions of officials from the Communications department. They detected a suspicious package deposited by the individual, which contained various quantities of hashish and pills hidden inside.
Following the discovery, the center's management and staff immediately notified the Guardia Civil. Officers arrived at the penitentiary facilities and formally arrested the individual for an alleged crime against public health.
“"Preventing the entry of narcotic substances into prison is essential because drugs severely disrupt regimental coexistence, generate debts among inmates, provoke aggressions, and compromise both the safety of workers and the reintegration process of the inmate population."
The TAMPM union has congratulated the officials involved for their actions, describing them as “impeccable, meticulous, and professional.” Furthermore, the union took the opportunity to reiterate its complaints about the center's deficiencies, demanding coverage for a deficit of approximately 50 staff members across all prison areas, especially in the Internal Service and the Communications and Packages department.
In addition to staffing shortages, the union organization is requesting more material resources, such as advanced scanners and trace detectors, as well as the urgent and permanent implementation of a K9 Canine Unit with dogs trained in drug detection. The union reaffirms its commitment to defending “the dignity, safety, and rights” of penitentiary professionals.
