The Government's Deputy Delegate in Almería, José María Martín, has opened training sessions for the officials and operational staff involved in the Strait Crossing Operation (OPE). The operation, running from June 15 to August 15, anticipates a nearly 3% rise in both passengers and vehicles.
Martín highlighted the crucial role of the Sub-delegation of the Government and the General Secretariat for Civil Protection and Emergencies in planning this operation. He noted that the addition of a new shipping company, AML, operating the connection to Nador, will contribute to this projected growth.
The primary goal of these sessions is to enhance coordination and planning for potential risk situations, ensuring all participants are prepared. The Directorate General for Civil Protection and Emergencies is spearheading these efforts to fine-tune the Provincial Plan.
Key participants in the operation include the Port Authority of Almería, Maritime Captaincy, Health for International Travellers, National Police, Civil Guard, Civil Protection of the Regional Government of Andalusia and the Almería City Council, alongside shipping companies, the health district, Red Cross, the Provincial Traffic Headquarters, and port and local police.
“"Last year it again registered a significant volume of activity, consolidating itself as one of the main connection points with North Africa, and this summer we are preparing for a new edition of the OPE with a growth forecast close to 3% in both passenger and vehicle transit, which obliges us, if possible, to further strengthen planning and coordination among everyone."
The OPE, held since 1986, manages the transit of people of North African origin traveling from various European countries to North Africa during the summer. Approximately fifty people attended the training day, including representatives from the National Police and the Civil Guard in Almería.
