The initiative, featuring 33 tables in the capital and 25 across the rest of the province, seeks public collaboration to fund research projects and provide essential aid to those battling the disease. The provincial president of the entity highlighted the importance of the generosity of Almería's residents, a tradition repeated year after year.
“"What we ask for on this day is the collaboration and generosity of all Almerians, as we habitually do year after year."
The Spanish Association Against Cancer stands as the private entity that allocates the most funds to oncological research in Spain, having invested 157 million euros in 792 active projects nationwide, four of which directly impact Almería. The president emphasized that cancer represents the greatest current socio-health challenge, being the leading cause of death in men and the second in women, with an average of 11 diagnoses daily in the province.
Beyond its health impact, the disease carries significant economic consequences, as many working-age patients must leave their jobs for treatment. Therefore, the association provides basic aid for rent, food, and pharmacy expenses, in addition to crucial psycho-oncological support.
The presentation of this annual fundraiser included the participation of researchers who are beneficiaries of AECC grants, who shared the progress of their studies. One, focused on physical exercise against breast cancer, has involved over 600 women from the province. Another researcher detailed advancements in colorectal cancer, while a third focuses on childhood cancer survivors. A volleyball player and a flamenco singer also joined the cause, encouraging citizens to participate and support the fight against this disease.
