The Almería City Council has initiated a conservation project to protect the original graffiti found in the Civil War Shelters, created by the population during the bombings between 1937 and 1939.

These drawings and writings, which emerged in the darkness of the tunnels while the city was under attack, are a direct testimony from those who sought refuge. Over time, humidity and the activity within the space have caused significant deterioration, endangering the survival of these valuable historical inscriptions.
The intervention, awarded to the company Jarquil, will last six months and will focus on the conservation of the graffiti and other original elements. The project has been rated as “Outstanding” by municipal technicians, who highlight the precision of the proposal for such a delicate and highly valuable heritage environment.

"We are not just working on walls, but on the direct testimonies of those who sought protection within them."

The main objective of this action is not to restore or redo, but to stabilize and halt the degradation of what already exists. Rigorous scientific criteria will be applied to ensure that the graffiti is maintained as it has reached us today, preserving its authenticity. The Almería Shelters, which receive thousands of visitors annually, require special protection for this unique heritage.
The initiative seeks to ensure that these words and marks, etched during one of the city's most difficult periods, remain visible for future generations, allowing those who walk these passages today to connect with the experience of those who hoped to survive in the same place.
