This Sunday, Almería will host one of the most anticipated sporting events on the calendar, the Half Marathon, which has sold out all its entries across three disciplines. Despite the threat of rain, the race will proceed, with proceeds benefiting the Almería Parkinson's Association (APAL).
This year's edition marks a milestone with 5,000 registered runners, representing a 16% increase compared to the 4,200 participants in 2025. The organization, led by Nexal 2020, estimates that the event will generate an economic impact exceeding two million euros. The competition will include the Half Marathon (21.097 kilometers) with 3,000 participants, the Healthy Race (ten kilometers) with 1,500, and the children's races with 500.
A notable aspect of this edition is the significant increase in runners from outside Almería, rising from 20% to 36% of the total. Among the participants are athletes from 16 different nationalities, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Canada, and the United States.
Among the largest groups that have arrived in the city to compete is the Club Marathón Aranjuez, with sixty participants from the Madrid municipality, accompanied by about forty more people. Fernando Tabernilla Palacios, the club's president, explained to Diario de Almería why they chose Almería for this adventure.
“"We make it a habit to do one race a year in a special city in Spain. We look for a Half Marathon and ten kilometers so that each member can do the desired distance, and we pay for their travel, hotel, and food, thanks to their collaboration with all the club's tasks."
The involvement of Emilio Baeza, a director at CD Espartanos del Alquián and a recent member of the Madrid club, was another key reason for choosing Almería over other options like León. Visitors will take advantage of the weekend to explore iconic sites such as the Alcazaba and Cabo de Gata.
Regarding the schedule, the Half Marathon will start at 8:30 AM, the Healthy Race at 9:00 AM, and the children's races will be held this Saturday from 5:30 PM. All races will start and finish in front of the Palacio de los Juegos Mediterráneos. Javier Bervel, the organizer, stated that the start time has been moved forward to avoid the hottest hours, and aid stations will be improved with gels and other hydration elements.
