Quéntar, Without Citizens Party Representation in Upcoming Andalusian Elections

The Granada municipality, a stronghold for the Citizens Party in previous elections, finds itself without its usual option for May 17.

The municipality of Quéntar, in Granada, faces the upcoming regional elections on May 17 without the presence of the Citizens Party, a political force that has been an electoral reference in the locality for years.

The absence of the Citizens Party from the ballots for the 2026 Andalusian elections marks a significant change for Quéntar, a locality that has shown strong support for the party in previous calls. This municipality, with barely a thousand inhabitants, has been a stronghold for the orange formation, even winning the regional elections in 2018 and holding the mayoralty for three consecutive terms.
The municipality's connection to a prominent party figure, who spent their childhood in Quéntar and was the lead candidate for Granada in general elections, helped consolidate support. In fact, Quéntar was the first Granada locality to have a Citizens Party mayor after a vote of no confidence in 2016. At the local level, the party remains strong, having won the last municipal elections with an overwhelming majority.

"We are orphaned and I will not ask for votes for anyone; no party represents me. I tell the neighbors who ask me to cast a blank vote as a punishment for what happened here in Quéntar after the rains, when no one came, neither from the PP, nor the PSOE, nor Vox, despite being ground zero of the catastrophe in Granada."

In the last regional elections in 2022, voter turnout in Quéntar was 58.27%. The Popular Party won with 130 votes, closely followed by the Citizens Party with 115. Other parties such as the PSOE, Vox, Por Andalucía, and Adelante Andalucía also gained representation. The voting trend in the municipality has been variable in regional elections, with different parties achieving victory in various calls.
The local party leadership defends the importance of its presence at the municipal level, highlighting effective and close management of citizens' problems. Given the absence of the Citizens Party in the regional elections, attention now focuses on how the votes of its sympathizers will be redistributed, and whether this will lead to increased abstention or support for other political formations.
